George Hennies Smith

George Hennies Smith, age 83, of Heavner Road in Lincolnton, NC, passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.  Mr. Smith was born February 03, 1941, in Chester County, SC, son of the late Zebulon Vance Smith, Sr. and Ludie Brakefield Smith.  

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Judy Dodgin Smith of the home; daughter, Lisa Smith (Scott Bowman) of Bolivia, NC; sons, Marty Smith (Cindy) of Denver, NC, and Tony Smith (Katie Parker) of Lincolnton, NC; sisters, Patricia Abernathy of Lincolnton, and Martha Curry (Lee) of Myrtle Beach, SC; grandchildren, Kara Sprinkle (Jake), Cassie Urban, Cheyenne Cook (Justin), Chris Smith, Alexis Krieger (Andrew), Tori Holcomb (Spencer), and Kat Parker; and great-grandchildren, Keaton Cook, Vance Krieger, Jaxon Smith, Ava Krieger, and Jasper Sprinkle.

After retiring from a long career in various sales capacities, George became passionate about substitute teaching at Lincolnton High School and was considered the #1 among staff and students.  While raising his family, whom he loved dearly, he was an integral part of the Lincolnton High athletics programs, serving as sports boosters president and as one of the voices behind the microphone announcing games for football, baseball, and basketball.  In 2017, he was honored for 40 years of service to Lincolnton High School. In 2019, he was inducted into the Lincoln County Sports Hall of Fame.  He was recognized for his many years of service to the Special Olympics of Lincoln County .He is past Master of Lincoln Lodge #0137 A.F. & A.M., 32nd degree Scottish Rite; and member of Oasis Shriners.

He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and ran the audio-video equipment for services for more than 30 years. He served in many other capacities in the church.  He loved his Lord!

In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his brother, Zebulon Vance Smith, Jr.

A Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Smith will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 02, 2024, at First Baptist Church in Lincolnton, NC, with Dr. Stanley Spence and Dr. Dixon Free officiating.  Inurnment with Masonic Rites will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery of Lincolnton, NC. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:45 p.m. Tuesday at the church prior to the service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 201 Robin Road, Lincolnton, NC 28092; or Masonic Home for Children, 600 College Street, Oxford NC, 27565.
