James Stuart Mullen
( August 17, 1961 - June 5, 2021 )
James Stuart Mullen, known for his friendly personality and love for others, passed away on June 5, 2021 at the age of 59 after complications from pancreatitis.  Stuart was born on August 17, 1961 and was predeceased by his parents, Richard Albert “Dick” Mullen and Bonnie Mauney Mullen.  He had an idyllic childhood as the youngest of three children in a loving family.  He had very fond memories of growing up with lots of freedom to explore, and loved the outdoors.  A 1979 Lincolnton High School graduate, he was a stellar football defensive lineman.  He continued his education at Appalachian State University, where he majored in Industrial Arts, and met his future wife, Sherilyn Carroll, graduating in 1983.  He and Sheri were married on August 11, 1984. They instilled their love for Appalachian in their children and they all enjoyed attending App State football games and connecting with friends.

From the time he was a young boy, Stuart loved to work.  He established his own lawn mowing business before he got his driver’s license.   He prided himself on keeping an immaculate house and lawn.  His 36 year career was with the airline industry, from Piedmont Airlines, to US Airways, to American Airlines, where he held various positions, ending with Station Accounting.

Stuart was a member of Freedom Church, and his strong faith was a guiding light for his life.  He was known for always wanting to help others.

He continued to love the outdoors, and enjoyed his Jeep rides,  traveling new and favorite routes, rain or shine.  He enjoyed his regular beach trips with his family, and his church’s annual Men’s Retreats to the coast.

Stuart was popular with children and adults.  He loved to joke, and showed interest in all people in his day-to-day interactions.  People all around town recognized him and were always happy to see him.  He was blessed with a wonderful personality and good natured spirit.  He will be remembered for his warm smile and sense of humor- he had a recognizable laugh and delighted in making people laugh.  He had a very big heart and loved deeply.  Stuart never met a stranger and was loved and will be missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Sheri; children Katie Wise (Rob), Matthew Mullen (Maggie Sousa); grandson Lucas Wise; brother Scott Mullen (Ronda); sister Cindy Poe (Ron); mother-in-love Jane Carroll; brother-in-love Bill Carroll (Summer);  nephews Alex Mullen (Nicole), Drew Mullen (Whitney) and great-nieces, Karis, Kelsie and Madeline Mullen, along with many beloved cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at 3:00 PM at Boger City Baptist Church, 2201 East Main Street, Lincolnton, NC.  The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:30 before the service.  Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christian Ministries of Lincoln County, P.O. 423, Lincolnton, NC 28093.
