Colleen Hawkins Rhyne

Colleen Hawkins Rhyne, age 83, of Wilma Sigmon Road in Lincolnton, died Sunday, November 18, 2018.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, November 26, 2018, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Michael Collins officiating. The family will receive friends in the North Wing of the church on Monday from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m.

Mrs. Rhyne was born December 14, 1934, in Lincoln County, to the late Joseph and Anna Chapman Hawkins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Jack Rhyne; a son, Scottie Sisk; two sisters, Johnsie Fowler and Lib Bumgarner; a brother, Fred Hawkins; and twin brother, Coleman Hawkins.

Mrs. Rhyne was a devoted wife and a loving mother and grandmother. She was a person of strong Christian faith whose generous spirit was recognized by everyone who met her. A 1953 graduate of Lincolnton High School, Mrs. Rhyne worked for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, retiring in 1990. After her retirement, Mrs. Rhyne was a tireless volunteer, working with a number of organizations, including Amy’s House, Lutheran Brotherhood, Lincoln County Hospital, and the Guardian Ad Litem program. In 1987, she was named Mother of the Year by the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Homemakers Organization. In 1993, she was proud to receive the Governor’s Award for Volunteer Work from Governor Jim Hunt. Her dedication to her community was also recognized locally, as she received the Volunteer Service Award from Lincoln Medical Center in 1996. When she wasn’t volunteering, Mrs. Rhyne could be found working in her garden or at her church, quilting, or caring for her beloved grandchildren and grand-dogs. Mrs. Rhyne will be remembered by all who knew her as a person who was always there to serve others, no matter the need.

She is survived by a son, Mark Rhyne, and wife, Bonita, of Denver; four daughters, Cheryl Featherstone of Lincolnton, Gayle Barnwell and husband, Keith, of Granite Falls, Lisa Rhyne and Anthony Fox of Charlotte, and Suzanne Rhyne of Lincolnton; a sister, Carolyn Myers Sloan of Winston-Salem; grandchildren, Jennifer Featherstone, James Barnwell and wife, Natalie, Sarah Featherstone, Emily Featherstone, Michael Rhyne, Savannah Rhyne, Alex Rhyne, and Jadon Rhyne; and great-grandchildren, Hailey Biddix and Joseph and Taylor Beal.
