( September 28, 1927 - February 17, 2015 )
Evelyn Yates “Nana” Gregory, age 87, of Denver went home to be with her Heavenly Father on February 17, 2015 after precious moments of time surrounded by her entire treasured family.

Born in Durham County in 1927, she was the daughter of the late Matthew Titus and Minnie Ruth Yates. In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Coy Woodrow Gregory of Durham. Survivors include three children, Kelly Gregory Snyder, Kenneth McCoy (Misty) Gregory, Jennie  (David) Goforth; seven  grandchildren; Chance (Lindsey) Gregory, Tiffany (Rich Salmons) Gregory, Stephanie (Brandon) Tyson, Ashleigh (Erich) Cloninger, McCoy (Haley) Goforth, Leah (John Desern,III) Snyder, Yates Gregory Snyder along with eight great grandchildren; Kaitlyn Gregory, Avrey Tyson, Adelyn Tyson, Norah Cloninger, Jake Desern, Liam Salmons and soon to welcome Tatum Gregory and Hawkins Goforth.  Survivors also include sister, Carolyn (Belton) Atkinson and brother, Harold (Patsy) Yates both of Durham, NC.

Upon retiring as bank manager of Bank of America, Evelyn enjoyed several years of walks on the beach, gathering seashells, family visits, fishing off of the pier at Apache Campground in North Myrtle Beach, SC and travel. At the age of 70, Evelyn “earned her wings” in her pursuit as a flight attendant with Mesa Airlines and was affectionately referred to as “Nana”.  She has been noted in various means of media as a woman of adventure and determination in What’s Next, Defying Gravity, Womans’ Day, USA Today, AARP Magazine, Associated Press, Paul Harvey, Aviation Careers Magazine and various local newspapers. As aging would allow, Evelyn remained actively involved in the ministries of Westport Baptist Church and continued to share the gospel of Christ. Among various roles in the community, she also served as an advocate for the elderly as a participant of the Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee. Above all she was an exceptional mother, grandmother and “Nana” to all that she encountered.  Evelyn Gregory excelled and took great pride in ministering to the needs of individuals near and far.

A receiving of friends will be held on Friday, February 20, 2015, at Westport Baptist Church from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m.  Interment will be at Maplewood Cemetery in Durham, NC at a later date to be determined.

Special thanks to the outstanding doctors and staff of CMC-Main 7 Tower, 3 Tower and ED.  Their exceptional loving care and professionalism of our mother will always be remembered, along with the support of Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to CMC-Main 7 Tower, Westport Baptist, Hospice or a treasured charity of your choice in remembrance of the loving and giving spirit of our mother.
