Rosalyn "Rosie" Francis Modlin
( November 24, 1925 - March 9, 2024 )
Mrs. Rosalyn “Rosie” Francis Modlin died peacefully at home, surrounded by family, in the early morning hours of March 9, 2024. She was born on November 24, 1925 in Shelby, NC, and was the daughter of the late Annie Ola Ervin and Edward Earl Francis. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Eugene Dellinger Modlin; her sister, Barbara Anne Williams; and one grandson, Zachary Eugene Modlin.
Affectionately referred to as “My” by her family, Rosie is survived by: her three children—Dr. Michael Modlin and wife Jane of Chapel Hill, Rosanne Modlin Short of Raleigh, and Dr. Eugene Modlin and wife Laurie of Hickory; seven grandchildren— Candace Modlin Davis (Jeff), Michael Modlin (Brooke), Thad Modlin (Emily), Jennifer Short Schoenholz (Derek), Joe Short (Roni), Hayes Modlin (Jessie), and Hillary Modlin; fourteen great-grandchildren; and her dear cat, Missy.
Mrs. Modlin grew up in Shelby, NC, then attended and graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College (where she met Gene). Once her youngest child reached school-age, Rosie went on to teach 1st Grade in Lincoln County for 30 years. Her impact was undeniable, and she still had former students extending their love and appreciation until the very end.
Rosie and Gene were staples in the Lincolnton community for countless years. They were passionate supporters of Lincolnton High School sporting events, active members of First United Methodist Church, and dedicated volunteers to multiple organizations. They truly exemplified what it meant to have a life centered around faith, family, and friendship.
To those who knew her, Mrs. Modlin was kind, gracious, gentle, steadfast, and warm (her giving spirit even left us with one final gift on the day of her passing—Carolina at Duke, 85-79). The strength she exhibited, especially during those final years, was inspiring. We are so thankful for the 98 years she had on this earth.
Finally, the Modlin family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to two groups of people in particular. First, Rosie’s hospice team provided her with exceptional care for several years. They were so responsive, professional, and compassionate, and their loving expertise helped lessen the difficulties of a challenging time.
Second, this journey would not have been made possible without all of our devoted caregivers. Regardless of length of service, they each infused Rosie’s life with joy, meaning, and companionship. Because of their help, she was able to live out her days in the comfort of her own home. We are especially indebted to the three who poured into Rosie’s life until her final breath—Sherry Rhodes, Robbie Ledford, and Annette Cummings. Their selflessness and care continually went the extra mile.
The Modlin family will receive friends on Wednesday afternoon, March 13, 2024, from 2:00 to 3:00pm at First United Methodist Church in Lincolnton. The funeral service will follow immediately after at 3:00pm in the same location. Interment will be at Hollybrook Cemetery.
