( February 3, 1930 - January 26, 2024 )
Mary Alice Roberts Avery, age 93, of the Daniels Community in Lincolnton, NC, passed away at home peacefully on January 26, 2024, with her family by her side.

The funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at Messiah United Methodist Church with Rev. Kevin Miller and Rev. Jim Mathews officiating.  Burial will follow in the Russell Chapel Cemetery.  The family will receive friends 1:00 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Mary Alice was born February 3, 1930, to John Thomas and Emma Virginia Sale Roberts.  She remembered her Mom teaching her the 23rd Psalm.  She was orphaned at the age of 7 and raised by a caregiver.  She married Wilford Clarence Avery at an early age and they began their journey together shortly after he returned from service in the U.S. Army.  Together they raised nine children.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and daughter Vickie, and brother Julian Roberts.

Survivors include two daughters, Frances (Johnny), Joanne (Danny); six sons, Ray (Jeanie), Joe (Rosie), John (Darlene), Mike (Melinda), Donald (Debbie), and Bobby (Donna); sixteen grandchildren, Ashley (Wanda), Buffy (Bryan), Amy (Frank), Jennifer (Cale), Shelly (Lee), Tommy (Amber), Chad (Wendy), Marcie (Wesley) David (Abby), Alison, Amanda (Todd), Matt (Kelly), Chelsea, Travis (Brittney), Wilford (Julian), and Nick (Tylee); and eighteen great-grandchildren.

She was an active member of Messiah United Methodist Church and was involved in the United Methodist Women, and taught VBS and Sunday School until her health declined.

She finished her GED at Gaston College and went on to get certification in early child care and became the director of West Lincoln Child Development Center.  After her retirement, she continued to care and love on her grand and great-grandchildren.

She enjoyed cooking, gardening, caring for her chickens, and just being Mamaw.  Some of her earlier friends called her Peg or Peggy that translated means Pearl, and that is what she was, a genuine Pearl.

The family would like to thank her private nurse, Janet Ray, and Jessica and Rhonda from Hospice, and Donna Harris for all her help.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Messiah United Methodist Church, 4102 NC-27, Lincolnton, NC  28092.
