Dr. Everett Theodore Mullen, Jr.

Dr. Everett Theodore “Ted” Mullen, Jr., died from pneumonia on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at Peninsula Family Care Home in Cornelius.
Born in Lincolnton, N.C., on January 14, 1948, he was the son of Everett T. Mullen, Sr., and Evelyn Self Mullen. He is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife of fifty years, Grace Friend Mullen.
Dr. Mullen is survived by his sister Sue Mullen Setzer of Cornelius, N.C., his brother Walter Lee Mullen and his husband Jamie Mullen Rude of Milford, CT, and his niece Joy Setzer Henderson and great-nephew Timothy Peter Henderson of Mt. Holly, NC.
A 1970 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Davidson College with an AB in Religion, Dr. Mullen received his PhD degree from Harvard University in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations in 1976. He was Professor of Religious Studies for his career at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis, IN. In 1993, he became the first Director of the IUPUI Undergraduate Honors Program. A frequent contributor to various religious dictionaries and journals, he often made presentations at religious societies and academies. The three books on the Old Testament that he authored were published by Scholars Press.
Ted and Grace were advocates of the Humane Society. They raised nine Basset hounds during their life together, including Scarlett, Rhett, Magnolia, and finally Buster. After Grace died of cancer on September 1, 2022, Ted asked to move south. His sister Sue became his legal guardian and moved him to a memory care home in Cornelius. They became active in St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson near Ted’s alma mater.
The family is grateful for the care provided by Senior Community Connections volunteer Karin Fuqua, St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, Peninsula Family Care Home, and VIA Hospice of Davidson.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Hollybrook Cemetery in Lincolnton, NC, with Rev. Carmen Germino officiating.
