Leonard Elliott Beal

Leonard Elliott Beal, age 96, of Simpsonville, SC, formerly of Lincolnton, NC, passed away on June 18, 2023.

A funeral service for Mr. Beal will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 23, 2023, at the First United Methodist Church of Lincolnton, NC.  Interment will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery of Lincolnton.

Elliott was born on May 19, 1927, in Lincolnton, NC. He was a graduate of Lincolnton High School and attended Catawba College where he played both football and baseball.  His college career was interrupted when he was drafted into the Air Force where he served with the U. S. occupation forces in Japan just after World War II.  After his time in the Air Force, he returned to Catawba College and graduated in 1949.  He formed Superior Loan and Finance Company, Inc. in 1951 and served as its President until selling the business to a subsidiary of Citibank during the late-1990s.  

He was always grateful for those who helped and supported him through the years, and he sought to repay that kindness by serving others in multiple ways.  He served in various leadership roles at First United Methodist Church in Lincolnton where he was a member of the congregation for over 70 years.  He was thankful for the education he received in the Lincoln County Schools, and he served on the Lincoln County Board of Education for 12 years, five of those years as chairman.  He also served as local president of the Jaycees, Noon Optimist Club, Chamber of Commerce, and United Way.

He was preceded in death by four siblings:  Marjorie B. Rhyne, James E. Beal, Thelma B. Tallent and John F. Beal.

He is survived by his wife of seventy-five years, Lou Rhyne Beal; daughter Susan Bradshaw and husband Scotty of Simpsonville, SC; son Bryan Beal and wife Beverly of Lincolnton, NC; grandchildren, Addie Finch of Greenville, SC; Ben Beal and wife Jessica of Charlotte, NC; and Bayley Stidham and husband Andrew of Mount Pleasant, SC; sister-in-law Jan S. Beal; and niece Ann Snead.
