Judith Poteet Cole

Judith Poteet Cole, age 83, of Island View Court in Denver, departed her earthly home on Saturday, May 6, 2023. She is now with God the Father and Jesus, God’s son.

A memorial service will be held May 20, 2023 at 2:30 P.M. at St. Peter-by-the-Lake Episcopal Church with Father Ron Taylor officiating.  

Mrs. Cole was born April 8, 1940, in South Charleston, West Virginia, to the late Russell Lee Poteet and Mary Virginia Crawford Poteet.  

Raised in South Charleston, her college studies began at Marshall University. Upon marriage in 1959 she completed her undergraduate studies (Biology, Education, Art education) at the University of Charleston in1962. While attending college, her daughters were born in 1961 and 1962.

In 1963, Judy began her career at the University of Charleston, teaching biology, anatomy, physiology, and nutrition for 6 years. During this period she completed her Master’s Degree from Marshall University.

Moving to Shelby, North Carolina, Judy taught at Gaston College for 29 years, retiring in 1999. In 1986, she moved to Lake Norman at Denver, N.C. Following deaconal studies, she was ordained in 1996 and served St. Peter-by-the-Lake Episcopal Church as deacon for 26 years.

Mrs. Cole’s life was devoted to serving the Lord for both her family, church and community. Her love shone through in many ways and at all times. She is survived by her husband, David R. Cole of the home; two daughters, Cherie C. Parsons of Denver, and Natalie C. Bishop (Mike) of Raleigh; brother, Wade Poteet (Sharon) of Arizona; sister-in-law, Karen Poteet of Virginia; seven grandchildren, Lauren McKay (Kyle), Daniel Bishop, Brent Bishop, Ginny Walls (Steven), Cole Parsons, Katie Parsons, and Tols Detmers; and five great-grandchildren, Caroline McKay, M.J. McKay, Jack McKay, Walker Walls, Layne Walls, Tolson Detmers, and Julienne Detmers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Peter-by-the-Lake Episcopal Church, 8433 Fairfield Forest Road, Denver, NC  28037, or to Hospice of Lincoln County, 900 Dontia Drive, Lincolnton, NC  28092.
