David Samuel Oakes
( October 23, 1934 - September 30, 2022 )
David Samuel Oakes left his earthly family to be accepted into the
loving arms of his Sweet Jesus for eternal life on September 30, 2022.
He was a dedicated husband, father, paw-paw, g-paw, brother, Uncle
David, and friend. With each person he loved and everyone he met, he
would share his love of his “Sweet Jesus” and the message of His
saving grace. His greatest desire was that everyone he met would
come to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and receive the gift of
eternal life.

David was born in Burlington, North Carolina to Etta McCrickard Oakes
and Curtis White Oakes. His parents raised him and his siblings, Mary
Lou, Grace and Glenn in a Christ-centered home. He married the love
of his life, Jo Ann (Georgia) Wolfe Oakes on April 16, 1955, who was
his “Earth Angel” until she went to meet Jesus on October 2, 2012.
Their life together was a true love story in which they made Christ the
center of their lives as they raised their three daughters, Tammy,
Robin and Dana.

After his daughters married men that he accepted and loved as his
sons: Reverend Robert Baker (Tammy), Marvin Sams (Robin), and
Todd Friday (Dana), he was blessed with grandchildren - Ashleigh
Sams Waters, husband Steve; Reverend David Baker, wife Jenna;
Andrew (AJ) Sams, wife Sarah; Jeffrey Friday, wife Cassie, Daniel
Friday, Evan Friday and Lilly Friday. Then God added to his joy seven
great-grandchildren: Samuel Waters, Kaleigh Waters, Axel Waters,
Caleb Baker, Evelyn Baker, Addie Sams, Areum Sams and Anakin
Sams.

His family has been richly blessed to have such a Godly man as David
Oakes as their father, father-in-law, paw-paw and g-paw. He always
wanted the best for them and would do anything within his power to
make sure they were happy. Most of all, he made sure that they had a
firm foundation in faith through modeling a Godly life, reading God’s
word with them, consistently sharing God’s love and praying for them
all without ceasing.

His “Earth Angel” Jo Ann Wolfe Oakes, his parents, his in-laws Herbert
and Grace Wolfe, his sister Grace Ingle and his brother Curtis “Glenn”
Oakes precede him in death. Left to cherish his memory are his
daughters, son-in-laws, grandchildren, grandchildren-in-law,
great-grandchildren, sister Mary Lou McLean, sister-in-laws Patricia
Oakes and Aundra Barham, brother-in-law Ralph Ingle and many
nieces and nephews, whom he loved.

David was a member of Boger City Baptist Church and loved his
church, his pastors and his precious brothers and sisters in Christ.
There he was one of the founders of the Prayer Partner Ministry, a
Deacon, a Sunday School Teacher and self-appointed Sunday greeter
and mint and ATOMIC FireBall distributor.

David served as a Gideon with the Lincoln East Camp, coordinating
their school, motel and nursing home Bible Distributions.
After serving as an Air Traffic Controller in the Air Force, David
dedicated his life to the science of textiles. While working at Mohican
Mills, he developed many strong friendships which continued even
after his retirement.

A Celebration of Life Reception will be held Friday, October 7 from 6-8
p.m. at Boger City Baptist Fellowship Hall. The Celebration of his
Homegoing will be at Boger City Baptist Church on Saturday, October 8
at 11 a.m. The family will then travel to Burlington, N.C. where his
earthly body will be laid to rest at Pine Hill Cemetery beside his “Earth
Angel” and beloved mother and father during a graveside service at
3:30 p.m. with his extended family.

The family would like to thank many, none more than the Lord God
Almighty for allowing us to have the love of this wonderful man for all
the years we did. We would like to thank his many families; his church
family, his Mohican family, his Gideon family and his Robin Johnson
Hospice House family, as well as the many doctors and nurses who
have cared for and served him throughout his journey home.
Truly, David Oakes was the “aroma of Christ” everywhere he went and
he will be missed dearly.

Memorials may be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 1074,
Lincolnton, NC 28093 and Robin Johnson Hospice House, 5005
Shepherds Way Drive, Dallas NC 28034.

Warlick Funeral Home is serving the Oakes family.
