Caroline Burgin Gourley Grisette
( February 25, 1942 - October 22, 2021 )
Caroline Burgin Gourley Grisette, age 79, died  October 22, 2021 in Edenton, NC.

She was born February 25, 1942, the daughter of Jacob Alexander Burgin, Jr. and Caroline Neely Burgin. She was a graduate of Lincolnton High School. She spent the summer prior to her senior year in Germany as the school’s first Foreign Exchange Student. She was a graduate of Queen College in Charlotte. Caroline loved her Lincolnton roots and they went with her to Statesville, NC where she raised her children, and on to Morganton, NC.

A lifelong lover of education and people, she spent most of her life in pursuit of both. Caroline simply never met a stranger and believed that life was about service. This calling led her to enter Duke Divinity School in Durham, NC at age 40. Her pioneering spirit and determination led her to graduate from Duke with a Masters of Divinity, Cum Laude, and on to become the first woman Presbyter and Stated Clerk of Presbytery of Western North Carolina.

“Mimi” to her grandchildren, her spontaneity, playfulness and sheer delight in going against what mom and dad would recommend made her the grandmother any child would envy.  She was extremely proud of each one and loved spending time with them.

Caroline was predeceased by her husband, Julius Alfred Grisette, Sr.  Surviving are her children Robert  Harrison Gourley, Jr (Heather Griffin) of Mooresville, NC;  Caroline Gourley Morgan “Kakki” (Ed) of Sunbury, NC; and step-son Julius Alfred Grisette, Jr. (Hattie). Also surviving is her brother, Alex Burgin (Carolyn) of Fountain Inn, SC.  She leaves eight grandchildren: Rob Gourley, Alex Gourley, Edwards Morgan, Margret Gourley, Harrison Morgan, Caroline Morgan, Layton Grisette, and Jay Grisette. Caroline considered each grandchild to be her favorite and made sure each one believed it.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, December 18, 2021 at the First Presbyterian Church, 125 North Meeting Street, Statesville, NC.
