David Herbertson

David Hillen Herbertson, age 80, of 2553 Laboratory Road in Lincolnton, died on Saturday, October 23, 2021.

Dave was born in Pensacola, Florida, on September 12, 1941, to David S. and Kathleen H. Herbertson. He is survived by his children David Kirk Herbertson and Carol Herbertson Eason, son-in-law Timothy Mark Eason, all of Lincolnton, and sister Kay Gillrup (Ted) of Jacksonville, Florida.

Dave graduated from Davidson College with a BA in English before attaining a Master of Divinity degree from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. Following his ordination in 1967, he served as senior pastor of five different churches; as chaplain with Gaston Hospice; and, since 2013, as Visitation Pastor of Covenant Church. He was in the ordained ministry for more than 50 years.

Dave’s great love during his ministry was pastoral care, deep involvement in helping people to discover the forgiveness, healing, peace, comfort, and joy of knowing Jesus Christ. He taught in a variety of settings, counseled both individually and in group settings, led growth and support groups an preached in his local congregations and through both radio and TV ministries. For more than six years he served as volunteer chaplain of the psychiatric unit of Chabert Hospital in Houma, LA. During his 10 years with Gaston Hospice he was a member of the Association of Professional Chaplains and wrote and taught seminars, including “Nurturing Hope in (Apparently) Hopeless Circumstances,” “Facing Grief with Hope,” and “Pastoral Care of the Chronically or Terminally Ill.”

In addition to his ministry in spiritual things, Dave was closely involved with numerous educational endeavors. He was the founder and Principal of the Tiny Tim School for Exceptional Children in Camden, Principle of the Tabernacle Christian School in Charleston, Director of Development and member of the advisory board of Evangel Christian School in Franklin, and teacher/advisor/mentor/tennis coach at Rabun Gap – Nacoochee School in Rabun Gap, GA. For several years he served on the Renewal and Update Task Group of Southern Seminary.

Dave served in various capacities in both church and community activities over the years of his ministry. He was president of the Kershaw County Mental Health Association; headed the organizing committee of the Lincoln County Christian Ministries and was on its board of directors for many years; served on the ethics committee and the institutional review board of Terrebonne General Medical Center (Houma); and the ethics committee of Gaston Memorial Hospital (Gastonia); was the advisor to the Women’s Aglow Fellowship; was Moderator of the Presbytery of the Central South of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (2000); served for four years as a president and member of the Board of Directors of the Macon County Evangelistic Crusade; and was a certified teacher/trainer for Evangelism Explosion. He served 11 years in the Chaplains’ Corp of the U.S. Army Reserve.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, November 14, 2021, at Covenant Church with Rev. Mike Devine and Rev. Nathan Grooms officiating.
