Winifred Marie Verrill Monte
( March 3, 1932 - October 21, 2020 )
Winifred Marie Verrill Monte of Cherryville, NC. passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2020.

Marie was born March 3, 1932 in Bournemouth, England. She grew up in Brighton, England during WWII and often shared vivid memories of that time, such as listening to the buzz bombs dropping in the night and wondering where they would fall. Marie came to the United States in 1956 on a nurses exchange and cared for polio patients at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. She met her husband Raymond Monte on a blind date at a race track.  They were married 3 days shy of 61 years when Ray passed in 2018. They started their family in Brooklyn, New York, then moved to New Jersey in the early 60s. In 1972, the Montes moved to Cat Square, NC. Marie worked as an RN at Lincoln County Hospital and retired in 1996.  In 2003, the couple moved to Crouse, NC. They had an adventure filled retirement and traveled extensively. Marie was an avid reader, enjoyed her daily crossword and played a mean game of scrabble. She loved her family and often said that the best time of her life was when all her children were still at home.

She is survived by her son Michael A. Monte (Mary) of Hickory, NC; daughter Maureen M. Elmore (Barry) of Lincolnton, NC; daughter Patricia J. Roberts (Willis) of Prineville, Oregon; daughter Anne M. Parker (John) of Tyner, NC; grandson Jason A. Elmore (Lori); grandson Ethan M. Monte-Parker (Demacy); grandson Ian H. Monte-Parker; great grandson Micaidem F. Monte-Parker; brother Michael Verrill (Von) of Selby, England; and sister Ann Moreau of Eastbourne, England.

Marie is preceded in death by her father John Edwin Verrill, mother Ada James Verrill, brother Dr. Peter Verrill and the love of her life Raymond Anthony Monte.

The family would like to send their sincere gratitude to Hospice of Lincoln County, and Mom’s nurse, Hannah, who shared a true bond with our mother and grandmother.  The family would also like to thank Carolina Care Retirement Cottages in Cherryville; the staff, residents, and especially Becky Walls for providing a safe and caring environment.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lincoln County,  900 Dontia Drive Lincolnton, NC.

Due to the pandemic, the family has opted not to have a public service at this time. A celebration of Marie’s life will be arranged at a later date.
