Emily Crowell Childs

Emily Crowell Childs, 97, of Abernethy Laurels in Newton, NC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 26, 2020.

Mrs. Childs was born December 16, 1922, in Lincoln County, to the late Charles Carlos Crowell and Mamie Lineberger Crowell.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Charles W. Childs; a brother, Charles Crowell; and a sister, Doris Spearman. 

Emily was an honors graduate of Lincolnton High School, and a graduate of Duke University.  She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, Lincolnton, where she served on several committees over the years.  She was past treasurer of united Methodist Women, and an active member of her Sunday School class.  She worked as the church secretary until she became officer manager for Dr. Leary Reid and Dr. Maurice Canaday at Lincoln Family Practice.

In 2002, Emily and Charlie moved to Abernethy Laurels.  She remained there for 18 years.  She participated in many activities, and she volunteered at LINC thrift store.  She was a master gardener, and she was well known for her beautiful needlework.  She was especially noted for helping residents in need, whether it be reading to someone, opening mail, guiding someone to meals, or just being a friend to anyone in need.

She is survived by one son, Charles W. Childs, Jr., and wife Jean, of Newton; a sister, Nancy Ramsey (Randy) of Lincolnton; a grandson, Charles W. “Trey” Childs, III, of Lincolnton; and a number of nieces and nephews.

There was a private graveside service at Hollybrook Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Susan Roddy officiating.
