Douglas Edgar Smith
( August 12, 1935 - November 15, 2018 )
Douglas Edgar Smith joined God’s heavenly choir on November 15, 2018, singing and praising his Saviour as he took his last breath.  He was surrounded by his loving wife and daughter and the wonderful Hospice team as he took his last breath.  He fought a long battle with cancer and is now free from the pain and suffering.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 19, 2018, in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rick Felts officiating.  Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Douglas was born to Ollie Mae Hull and William Miller Smith on August 12, 1935.  He graduated from Lincolnton High School and served in the Air Force Reserves.  He was an upholsterer for Southern Furniture Company and then retired and opened his own business, Doug’s Bolt and Tools at Jamestown Flea Market.  He loved working and meeting with people in this business and was always looking to help others.  He was most passionate about woodworking and he made many beautiful pieces of furniture and cabinets for his home.

Doug is predeceased by his mother, Ollie Mae, and father, Edgar, and a beloved son whom he loved dearly, Terry Douglas Smith.  He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lucille Smith; daughter, Debbie, and husband Terry Lee Hoyle, of Lincolnton; his daughter-in-law, Cathy Fritz of Hickory, NC; and brother, David Smith of Charlotte, NC.  He leaves behind his beloved grandsons, Shannon Smith, and wife Heather, Ashley Smith and Staci, and Wesley and Angela Hoyle.  He loved his great-grandchildren, Andrea Marie Haeck, and husband Tyler, Dylan Smith, Levi Smith, Miller, Emma Leigh and Ellis Claire Hoyle; step-grandchildren, Joe Fritz of Hickory NC, and Michael, and wife Katie, of Wilmington, NC.  He had one great-great-grandchild, Colton Haeck, and step-great-grandchildren, Olivia and Jackson Fritz of Wilmington, NC.

The family wishes to thank all of the wonderful staff at Levine’s Cancer Center in Lincolnton who cared for Doug during his treatments, and the hospice and Palliative Care of Lincolnton who offered their love and support to make his last days brighter and cheerful.  Many thanks to the wonderful neighbors who would visit with him and prayed for him.  They always put a smile on his face and cheered him up during the most difficult of days.

In lieu of flowers, gifts of remembrance may be made to Hospice of Lincoln County, 900 Dontia Drive, Lincolnton, NC  28092, or to East Lincoln Christian Ministry, PO Box 421, Denver, NC  28037.
