George Warren Fisher

George Warren Fisher, of Denver, NC, died on Thursday, March 1, 2018 in Huntersville, NC.

Mr. Fisher was born February 23, 1942, in Portsmouth, Virginia, to the late William Richard and Agnes Powell Fisher.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jeanie Harrison Fisher; two sons, Steven Jay Fisher and wife Theresa of Villa Rica, GA; Clayton Wayne Fisher and wife Stacy of Fairview, NC; three grandchildren, Morgan Campbell and husband Kyle of Wilmington, NC; Wesley Fisher of Dallas, GA; and Evan Fisher of Fairview, NC; one brother, William Richard Fisher, Jr. and wife Betty of Chesapeake, VA. He was a member of Denver United Methodist Church.

He graduated in 1960 from Maury High School in Norfolk, VA, where he was an outstanding athlete, lettering in football, wrestling and track. He received a football scholarship from the University of South Carolina and graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing. Anyone who knew George would agree that he was one of the Gamecocks most devoted and avid fans.  He also greatly enjoyed attending games for the Norfolk Tides and the Norfolk Admirals.  He worked for Colonial Stores and Camellia Foods as an advertising director, retiring in 2006.

He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and was active post-college, serving as coordinator of their reunions. He led a very active social life, involved in traveling softball leagues located in Tidewater, VA, a celebrated coach for little league football and played in the Joy Fund Charity Bowl. One of George’s great joys was being the Band Booster President for his son’s high school marching band, organizing the many details of assorted trips for band performances and fund raising.  Additionally, he enjoyed participating in dog obedience and agility training classes for his beloved Shelties, where he won various awards.

After moving to Denver, NC in 2008, he became actively involved in his church, serving on the Board of Trustees as well as the Board of Boy Scout Troop #84.  He served as a mentor at Rock Springs Elementary School. George began golfing regularly with a group of friends from his church who called themselves the Denver Emeritus Golfers.  George was known as their “Golf Commissioner”, keeping endless records and statistics of each week’s golf outings. He leaves behind many friends, church family and his golf group.

A celebration of George’s life will be held at Denver United Methodist Church’s “Scout Hut” on March 24, 2018 at 3:00pm.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
