Aubrey Gene Sherrill
( May 20, 1934 - January 14, 2018 )

Mr. Aubrey Gene Sherrill, age 83 of Walker Branch Road in Linconton died Sunday, January 14, 2018 at his home.

His funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at Asbury United Methodist Church with Rev. Ken Spencer officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Masonic graveside rites.

Mr. Sherrill was born May 20, 1934 in Caldwell County. He was the son of the late Dewey Mc Bride Sherrill and Ruby Garrison Sherrill. He was preceded in death by a sister Barbara Holland. Mr. Sherrill was a truck driver with Carolina Freight and later retired from Yellow Freight Trucking. Upon retirement, he volunteered with Meals on Wheels in Lincoln County serving the community for several years. Gene was a former active Shriner where he was involved with the Oasis Bobtails participating in many parades and events such as Special Olympics.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps having served during the Korean Conflict. Gene’s favorite hobby was playing the fiddle. He loved bluegrass music and enjoyed going to fiddler’s conventions. Many good times and memories were enjoyed by Gene and Janice at their mountain home near Galax, VA.

Mr. Sherrill is survived by his wife of 64 years, Janice S. Sherrill of the home; one son, Michael Sherrill and wife, Melinda of Lincolnton; two daughters, Cathy S. Scott and husband, Cordell of Lincolnton and Terri Abernethy of Lincolnton; one sister, Billie S. Sigmon of Mooresville; eight grandchildren, Jessica and Ritchie Black, Bo Abernethy and girlfriend Katie, Lindsey Lawing, Christine Diane Jenkins, Christopher Devin Jenkins, Christian Dillon Jenkins, Melia Vuncannon and Sam, Michael Sherrill, Jr.; four great- grandchildren, Arian and Luther Proctor, Kale and Marley Black; special sister-in-law Donna S. Heafner and nephew Johnny Heafner.

The family expresses sincere appreciation to Hospice of Lincoln County and special caregiver Dee.
