Charles Jackson Adkins, Sr.

Charles Jackson Adkins Sr of Denver, NC passed away on Sunday August 20, 2017 in Rock Hill, SC at Brookdale Assisted Living Alzheimer's and Dementia Facility.  Charles was born on March 3, 1932 in Raleigh County, WV. He was raised in Summers County, Meadow Creek, WV and attended Sandstone School.  He was working for C&O Railroad in WV when he was drafted into the Army during the Korean Conflict.  Fortunately he was stationed in Munich, Germany. Where he met a fellow soldier, Loy Huss, a Lincoln county native who suggested that he write to his sister in law, Monee Rash, back in the United States and they eventually became pen pals.  When he left the Army from Fort Meade, MD in September of 1954 with an Honorable Discharge, He bought a Bel Air Chevrolet and drove to the Lincolnton Post Office in downtown to meet his pen pal Monee. They were married within two months and have remained together since 1954 until his death.   Charles passed away this Sunday morning peacefully in his sleep.  Charles was preceded in death by his Father, James Ira Adkins, Mother, Ercelle Richmond Adkins, Brother, James Junior Adkins of Meadow Creek, WV. Daughter, Anita Adkins McIntosh, Great Grandson, Lincoln Thomas Norvell of Charlotte, NC and Son in Law, Charlie Vanhoy of Shelby, NC.   He is survived by his loving wife Sarah Monee Rash Adkins of Denver, NC. Daughter,  Sarah Adkins Vanhoy Proctor and Son in Law,  Larry Proctor of Shelby, NC.  Son, Charles Jackson Adkins Jr of Hollywood,FL.  Sisters, Berthenna Adkins of Sandstone,WV Janice Buckland of Hinton,WV and Dorothy Kincaid of Palmyra, VA.  5 Grandchildren and their spouses Eddie and Jennifer Vanhoy, David and Kellie Vanhoy, Caleb and Kelly Hill-McIntosh, Cindy and James Lofton, Wendy and Bradley Norvell and Twelve Great Grandchildren - Kayla Vanhoy, Mindy Vanhoy, Reagan Vanhoy, Riley Vanhoy, Charley Vanhoy, Ryan Vanhoy, Charlie Vanhoy, Grey Vanhoy, Shepherd Lofton, Lea Lofton, Holden McIntosh and Finnegan McIntosh.  Charles was a Teamster and worked as Diesel mechanic for Akers Motorlines, Johnson trucking company and Carolina Freight.   He retired after 30 years as a Teamster in 1991 and spent his retirement years working in his garden and enjoying his family.  

His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 24, 2017, in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Ingle officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association for research.
