Lewis Herbert Swartwout

Lewis “Lew” Herbert Swartwout, age 89, of Lincolnton, died on Wednesday, April 5, 2017.

A memorial service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, in Lincolnton, NC with Rev. David Wyant officiating.  Burial will take place at 1PM Friday, April 28th, in Mills River NC, at All Saints Anglican Church on McDowell Rd. 

Lew was born on August 1, 1927, in Washington, DC.  He was the son of the late Herbert B. and Betty B Swartwout.  He is preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Louise Bransom; a son, James Brandon Swartwout; a sister, Susanne Swartwout Morris; and a great-granddaughter, Bailey Colleen Sharp. 

Lew served in the Navy during World War II as a Seabee from 1944 to 1946.  He was a member of the WWII veterans group “Last Man Standing” club In Lincolnton. 

Lew worked as V.P. of Jefferson Spring Service in Washington, DC from 1948 to 1972.  He then was the owner of Royce Distributors (golf car dealer) in Beltsville, MD from 1972 to 1992.  He and Martha retired to Etowah and after her passing he married the former Sarah Lee Davis of Etowah in 2003.  Lew worked for several years at Champion Hills, looking after many local and visiting golfers. They moved to Lincolnton in 2010.  He was recently a member of the Lincoln Country Club and an avid golfer. 

Lewis is survived by his wife, Sarah Lee Davis Swartwout; son, Robert Swartwout (Lee) of Addy, WA; two stepsons, Don Davis of Clarkston, MI and Lee Davis of Weston, FL; one stepdaughter, Ann Hair of Lincolnton; one daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Swartwout of Wilmington, NC:  three grandchildren, Jeffrey Swartwout of Corinth, TX, Michael Swartwout of Wilmington, NC, and Ericka Swartwout Sharp of Sultan, WA; four great-grandchildren, Ryan Sharp, Taylor Sharp, Harper Swartwout and Hayden Swartwout; and nieces and nephews. 

Memorials may be made to the American Legion.
