Mary Frances Hall Kaufman
( April 23, 1940 - October 17, 2016 )
Mary Frances Hall Beals Kaufman peacefully passed away Monday morning, October 17, 2016 at her residence. She fought a long and courageous battle with lung cancer.
She was born April 23, 1940 in Vass, NC. Mary attended Vass-Lakeview and later received her Associates Degree of Nursing from Catawba Valley Technical College in Hickory.
Mary loved her nursing career and worked privately with terminal patients in their homes. This led her to start a business in the early 1980s called Unifour Nursing Service, which she later sold. She continued nursing in the Southern Pines area after she returned to her hometown of Vass, NC. After she retired, she stayed active spending time with her family and her precious “grandbabies.”
Mary met her husband Murray “Moe” Kaufman in Southern Pines and later the couple settled in Maiden and proudly watched their children attend high school and compete for the Maiden Blue Devils.
She grew up on a tobacco farm in Vass and continued her love of gardening, producing vast amounts of tomatoes, beans and peppers from anything that would hold potting soil. Her rosebushes were large and beautiful and had no thorns.
Mary was beloved by her family and friends and her warm soul will be missed by the world.
In addition to her parents William and Allie Hall, her first husband Calvin Beals, her husband Murray “Moe” Kaufman, her son William Myron “Billy” Beals, her brother Bill Hall, her sister Faye Seward, grandson Jonathan Beals and granddaughter Jessica Link preceded her in death. Her brothers Brent Hall of Flint, MI and Jerry “Sunshine” Hall of Vass, NC; sisters Nancy Kennedy of Sanford, NC and JoAnn White of Ellerbe, NC; daughters Calene Beals of Denver; Helen Link of Denver; Susan Woodley of Charlotte and Elizabeth Kaufman of Cornelius; and sons Mark Beals of Maiden and Sam Kaufman of Mooresville survive her.
She had 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
She requested no formal service; rather her ashes will be spread on her family farm in Vass – her happy place.
Mary led an amazing life and will be missed terribly by those that knew her.
She asked that memorials be made to The Spiritus Project – a charity in memory of her late granddaughter Jessica Link – to aide families of Cystic Fibrosis in need of support. Donations can be made online at www.spiritusproject.org or mailed to:
