Charles Harry Huss

Charles Harry Huss, age 89, died July 4, 2016, in Lincolnton.  The funeral to celebrate his life will be Wednesday, July 6, at 2:00 p.m. at Bethphage Lutheran Church with Pastor Fred Mitschke officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 5, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Bethphage Family Life Center.   Mr. Huss was born in Lincoln County June 20, 1927, son of the late Noah C. and Ava Bess Huss.  
Survivors are one daughter, Wanda Lutz and husband, Charles, of Lincolnton; a son, Dr. H. Fenwick Huss of Atlanta and New York; two grandchildren, Krista Lutz of Winston-Salem, and Bryan Lutz and wife, Jenn, of Lincolnton; four great-grandchildren, Elyssa Harris, Wyatt Harris, Joseph Lutz, and Olivia Lutz; two brothers, Edwin Huss and N.C. Huss; and two sisters, Christine Dixon and Marie Sigmon.  Preceding him in death were his wife of 71 years, Ruth Reep Huss; brothers, Boyce Huss, Roger Huss, Johnny Huss, and Donald Huss; and sisters, Thelma Hoyle and Mabel Greene.  

Mr. Huss graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne University and received his graduate degree from UNC-Chapel Hill.  He was a teacher and school administrator in Gaston County, where he retired as Assistant Superintendent after thirty-six years.  During his school career, he received the Ben Craig-First Union award as outstanding school administrator.  The award was used to establish an endowment at Gaston College. Mr. Huss was also a tax accountant who served hundreds of clients from his home office for over five decades.  

He was politically active throughout his life.  In July 1989, he became a Lincoln County Commissioner for five and a half years, four of those he served as chairman.  He was involved with many county boards and committees to improve the quality of life in Lincoln County.  He was on the founding boards of Lincoln County YMCA and Lincoln County Community Foundation.  In 1998 he was named Lincoln County Man of the Year.  He received the Lenoir-Rhyne University Alumni Service Award and served on the University’s Board of Visitors.  As an active member of Lincolnton Rotary Club, he was a Paul Harris Fellow Plus One.  Contributions to the Paul Harris Fellow are used to eradicate polio around the world.  

He began teaching Sunday School at age 19 and taught for over 60 years.  He served many terms on the church council and various committees for the church, including chairing the committee for construction of the Family Life Center.    

The family, at Harry’s request, prefers that no flowers be sent and that memorials be made to Bethphage Lutheran Church, 3440 Highway 182, Lincolnton, NC  28092, or to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC  28658.

Special appreciation is extended to his caregivers, Tilly Willis, Marcella Gingles, and Robin Morrison.  The family also appreciates the care given over the past eight months by Catawba Regional Hospice.
