Donald Giles Goodson
( March 1, 1938 - April 13, 2015 )
Donald “Don” Giles Goodson departed his earthly body April 13 at his home in Vale, surrounded by family. He was born in Lincoln County March 1, 1938 to the late Bill Goodson and Geneva Gabriel Goodson. In addition to his parents, Don is preceded in death by a brother Billy Goodson. The family takes comfort in knowing he was welcomed by his Heavenly Father and loved ones.
Don is survived by a brother, Andrew Goodson and wife Kathy of Simpsonville South Carolina, a niece Laura and husband Jeff of Bridport, Vermont.
Don has two daughters, Cathy Davis and husband Anthony, Tammy Gilmore and husband Dale all residing in Vale.
He is known as “Papa” to six Grandchildren; Paula Micol and husband Brad, Katie Wilson and Monty Mendenhall, Cole Wilson and husband R.J., Shelby Gilmore, Houston Gilmore and Chris Friday. He was blessed with two great-grandchildren who possess their Papa’s outgoing, loving and somewhat mischievous personality; Meredith Mendenhall and Asher Micol.
Don also leaves behind a very special friend and companion, Jeanette Mauney of Gastonia. The family is very grateful for the love and companionship she has given Don over the past four
years.
Don’s extended family included former in-laws that he loved and remained loyal to; Clifford “Bud” Mashburn, Bobby Mashburn and Jennie Jenkins of Denver, Luther Mashburn of Mount Holly, Gilbert Mashburn, Ernest Mashburn, Gail Jones and Tissie Bishop of Stanley, and Clarene Hoyle of Denver, as well as “adopted” grandchildren Libby Yarber of Blacksburg, Virginia, Stephanie Westmoreland of Lincolnton, and Victoria Morgan of Denver and Billy Wilson of Lincolnton.
His presence, we are sure, will be missed at the annual Gabriel family reunions where he enjoyed the company of so many aunts, uncles and cousins that he loved so much.
Don attended faithfully, First Presbyterian Church in Lincolnton. Over the years he has volunteered with many organizations; including Habitat for Humanity and Hesed House of Hope.
Having been born and raised in Lincoln County, he loved this place, and in particular our town.He often recalled times when town was the place families congregated on Saturdays, enjoyed telling where various businesses used to be or where a building once stood.
He enjoyed eating at City Lunch, especially on “fried chicken day”, but we all know it was not just the food that kept him coming back it was the people, staff and customers, and he considered them all his friends.
Donnie graduated from Lincolnton High School in 1957 and loved his classmates and helping with their reunions. They will be honored by the family at Don’s funeral having a special area to
be seated.
Donnie worked most of his adult life at Howard’s Construction Company.
The family will receive friends at Warlick Funeral Home in Lincolnton Wednesday, April 15 from 6 pm until 8:00 pm. The funeral will be held at 11:30 am on Thursday, April 16 at First Presbyterian Church, 114 West Main Street, Lincolnton.
Don’s family extends an invitation to everyone to enjoy City Lunch Hot Dogs and Ice Cream in the fellowship hall after the service. The family will rejoin the gathering following the committal at Hollybrook Cemetery. We hope that you will enjoy this as much as Donnie Goodson would
have.
