Derry Harris Carpenter

Mr. Derry Harris Carpenter, 81, of Lincolnton, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2013.

 

The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 3:15 pm on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Warlick Funeral Home.  A graveside service will follow at 3:30 pm at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton with Rev. Dr. Stanley Spence officiating.

 

Mr. Carpenter was born on May 27, 1931 in Gaston County to the late Clifford Rouse and Zona Farris Carpenter.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Joann Huss Carpenter. 

 

He is survived by two daughters and one son, Derri Ann Powell and husband Bob of Hickory, Cathey Denise Davis and husband Johnny of Iron Station, and Scott Harris Carpenter and wife Diana of Lincolnton. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Derrick Barineau, Clete Davis, Josh Davis and fiancé Kaylyn, Ellen Carpenter, Caroline Carpenter, and Julia Carpenter; and a sister, Lorene Carpenter Best of Lincolnton.

 

Derry graduated from Tryon High School in Gaston County and enrolled in barber school in Winston-Salem after graduation.  After he completed barber school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the 82nd Airborne in Fort Bragg, NC.  By trade, he barbered in Charlotte, High Shoals, Gastonia and Lincolnton. His happiest times were spending time with his children, grandchildren and on his Ford tractor farming his family land and raising cattle. He was also an avid outdoors man.  He loved to hunt quail with his Brittany Spaniels and enjoyed fishing on Lake Norman. 

 

The Carpenter family would like to thank the special care that was given to our father by Hospice and Palliative Care of Lincoln County.
