Margaret Anna Winstead Spainhour, age 89, of Charlotte, NC, died on Monday, August 6, 2012. There will be a private burial service Monday, August 13, 2012, at the Hollybrook Cemetery. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Mrs. Spainhour was born on May 23, 1923, in Lincolnton, NC, to the late Meldrum B. and Annie Heim Winstead. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Meldrum B. Winstead, Jr. Mrs. Spainhour received a Bachelor of Music in Piano from Salem College in 1944, and she was a member of the Salem College Alumnae Association for the rest of her life. She taught piano at Charlotte Country Day School and was a string instrument teacher in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. She was a highly respected piano teacher for over 50 years and was a member of the Piano Teacher’s Forum, the American Suzuki Association, and the Music Teachers National Association.
Mrs. Spainhour is survived by her children, R. Alexander Spainhour, III (Ellen) of Pendleton, SC; Elizabeth Spainhour Reid, David Spainhour, Anne Spainhour Whitlow (William), and James Spainhour, all of Charlotte; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made in honor of Margaret Winstead Spainhour to the Salem College School of Music, Hanes House, 601 S. Church St., Winston-Salem, NC, 27101.
